Couples Counselling in Sydney
Evidence based psychological support for partners navigating high stress demands and complex lives.
When career pressures, family obligations, and constant decision-making mount, even strong relationships can experience strain.
Professional couples counselling offers a confidential, neutral space to step back from daily noise—whether your goal is to rebuild lasting connection or navigate a constructive, respectful separation.
Understanding what's happening
One partner feels hurt, ignored, or overwhelmed and reacts to protect themselves — by criticising, pushing for an answer, defending, or withdrawing.
The other partner experiences that reaction differently than intended (e.g. a request for reassurance can feel like criticism; pulling back can feel like indifference).
Each response then feeds the other: pursuing harder can drive withdrawal, and withdrawal can drive more pursuit.
Over time this cycle repeats regardless of the topic, leaving both partners more frustrated and disconnected.
Couples often know what they argue about, but not why the same conflict keeps resurfacing. That's usually because a pattern has formed underneath the surface issue.
Patterns are also shaped by outside pressure — work, parenting, money, tiredness, past relationship experiences, or big life changes.
How I can help
What I don’t do is blame or decide who’s “right.”
With years of counselling experience, the patterns that undermine relationships are identified and challenged.
Together we work to..
Identifying the triggers that set off familiar arguments
Uncovering the feelings underneath anger, criticism, or withdrawal
Understanding how each partner interprets the other's words and actions
Recognising the strengths already present in the relationship
Clarifying what each partner actually needs and hopes for in the relationship, whether it continues or not.

No. You can come alone. Couples and family counselling can begin with one person. Even when others are not ready or willing to attend, working with one person can begin to change patterns of communication and interaction within the relationship or family. We can then consider together whether involving others may be helpful.

There is no set number of sessions, as this will depend on your circumstances, the issues you would like to address and your goals for counselling. During the first few sessions, we will develop a clearer understanding of what is happening and agree on a way forward. We will then review your progress regularly and adjust our approach as needed.
Counselling should be purposeful, and if progress is not being made, we will discuss this openly and consider whether a different approach may be more helpful.
